Courses WiSe 2017/2018

The following courses are offered in the winter term 2017/2018:

Lecture: Immunology I & II

Time: Mondays, 04:15 - 05:45 pm

Begin: 16 Oktober 2017

Location: LMU Biocenter, Großhaderner Str. 2, Room B 01.019

(small lecture theatre - Biology I)

Lab Course Immunology

Blockpraktikum Immunologie

Date: 05.-23.03.2018

Location: Biozentrum, Großhaderner Str. 2, Planegg-Martinsried, D00.017 und D00.021

Lecturers: Dr. Dirk Baumjohann, Prof. Dr. Thomas Brocker, Dr. Katharina Eisenächer, Prof. Dr. Vigo Heissmeyer, Prof. Dr. Ludger Klein, Dr. Jan Kranich, Prof. Dr. Anne Krug, PD Dr. Reinhard Obst, Dr. Lisa Richter, Dr. Susanne Stutte

For students of the masters program Biology and Biochemistry and students of Medicine. This lab course offers an introduction to practical skills, techniques and methods of current immunology. We will look at the anatomy of the immune system, isolation, manipulation and stimulation of immune cells. We will analyze lymphoid organs, antibody responses, phenotype immune cells, stimulate dendritic cells, activate and differentiate T cells in vitro and purify and label antibodies for flow cytometric analysis. The students will get insights into immune cell homing, differentiation of lymphocytes by surface markers, dendritic and T cell activation, signaling, proliferation, differentiation and MHC restriction. Techniques employed will include histology, fluorescence microcopy, flow cytometry (including data analysis using the FlowJo software), ELISA, Western blot and gel chromatography.

Interested students send an email to Marion Dorfmeister ( before November 01, 2017. The students will be informed of their registration on November 2, 2017.

For participation, passing the Immunology I exam on February 12, 2018 is mandatory!

Seminar: T cell differentiation and function

Using classical and current publications, basic principles and emerging concepts of T helper cell differentiation, function, and plasticity are being discussed.

Date: t.b.a.

Location: BMC, Großhaderner Str. 9, Martinsried, Room NB 00.005

Lecturer: Dr. Dirk Baumjohann

Seminar: Immunological Memory

The concept of Immunologyical Memory summarizes the long term protection against pathogens following an infection or immunization. Current literature of cellular and molecular aspects of it will be discussed. This course is thought for advanced students who have heard at least the Immunology I lecture or something equivalent.

Date: 03.03.- 04.03.2018

Location: BMC, Großhaderner Str. 9, Martinsried, Room NB 00.005

Lecturer: PD Dr. Reinhard Obst,

Seminar: The Experimental Basis of Immunology

For students of Biology, Biochemistry and Medicine (Wahlfach 1. Studienabschnitt)

This seminar deals with the biological basis of immunity and how we know about it from experiments. By looking at classical and current publications the central concepts of Immunology will be introduced. The class requires reading of several papers per week and the preparation of written summaries and flow charts. A basic understanding of Immunology is necessary and taking the lecture Immunology I & II is recommended.

Time: Mondays, 06.00 - 07.30 pm

Date: 16.10.2017

Location: BMC, Großhadernerstr. 9, Martinsried, Room NB 00.005

Lecturer: PD Dr. Reinhard Obst

Seminar: Immunopharmacology

Application-oriented immunology seminar

  • Understand the mode of action of biologicals and vaccines.
  • Get to know the production and application of immune pharmaceuticals (includes excursion to local biotech company).
  • Learn to present an original publication (experimental or clinical study).
  • Topics include cytokines and immunostimulators, immunoglobulins, cellular immunotherapy, allergy and hyposensitization, immune modulators in oncology and antiinflammatory biologicals.

Time: Wednesday, biweekly, 04:30 - 06:00 pm

Dates: 25.10.17, 08.11.17, 22.11.17, 06.12.17, 20.12.17, 10.01.18, 24.01.18 07.02.18.
